Latics versus Leeds - match preview

In fact, the Championship side will be the sternest test Latics have faced thus far this season.

The Yorkshire side may have lost Paul Robinson, Alan Smith, James Milner, Nick Barmby, Mark Viduka, Dominic Matteo, Ian Harte and Danny Mills this summer among others, but quality still remains that could enable United to bounce straight back up to the Premiership. And Leeds have stated that they will bring their full first team squad for this friendly. Maybe the Whites feel Latics are a sterner test than Valencia, whom Leeds meet on Sunday!

For example, former international players Steve Guppy and Mark Kinsella are currently on trial at the club. ‘Keeper Scott Carson, defenders Will Kilgannon, Fraser Richardson, Clarke Carlisle and forward Julian Joachim have all played for England at youth level. And let’s not forget Michael Ricketts did have one appearance for England as well…

Leeds, however, suffered a wake-up call Wednesday night with a 2-0 loss to Mansfield; with Wayne Corden and Colin Larkin scoring for the Stags. A similar result on Friday will give Athletic a massive lift for the start of this season. Let’s face it, if Oldham can beat Leeds, they can beat anyone in League One.

Gaffer Brian Talbot stated that he will not be making mass substitutions at half time, because as the season approaches players must get used to playing more than 45 minutes. Talbot told the Oldham Chronicle that he will start with what he feels is his strongest side, but does not know what this is yet. Will Haining and Adam Griffin will most likely be fit, after missing Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Newcastle Town, but Michael Clegg is doubtful to feature.

Finally, on the transfer front, forget Vieira to Real Madrid. The move that is keeping (some of) the nation in suspense is Kelvin Jack to Oldham Athletic. The Trinidadian goalkeeper had a fine performance against Newcastle on Tuesday, and a decision on his future will probably be made after Friday’s encounter.
