The Latics finally had a turn of luck which ended their dreadful run which has seen them plummet to next to the bottom of the league. Carl Winchester scored the match winning goal in the first half which gave John Sheridan his first win since his return as manager.
New signing Anthony Gerrard played a starring role with an impressive performance and it could have been 2-0 had Matt Palmer's early strike been on target. Other chances fell to both sides but the Latics held out for what could be a turning point in their fight against relegation.
