Athletic will need Government help to survive if a crucial court case is lost on July 23rd. MP Phil Woolas has written to the Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, urging her to set aside financial aid following the ITV Digital debacle. It is possible that more than 20 lower league clubs are in danger of folding after losing the lucrative TV money with Athletic losing £800,000.

Mr Woolas said, “This represents a significant proportion of their turnover and, in my view, threatens the future of the club. I don't believe the Government can stand by and watch while 20 or 30 football clubs go bankrupt because of what has happened. The Government needs to ask what it is going to do for these smaller clubs if the court case goes against them”.
