Former Latics star Mark Ward was arrested by drugs squad officers following a raid on a house in Prescot, Merseyside last Thursday. Cocaine and crack cocaine were discovered by detectives at the home of Ward. An estimated street value of about £2.5m. of drugs was found including several kilograms of Class A drugs and a variety of drugs paraphernalia.

Ward (42), who played for Latics between 1983 and 1985, was questioned by police and was charged with multiple drugs offences last Friday. The former midfielder also faces charges of possession with intent to supply cocaine and crack cocaine and being concerned with the production of crack cocaine. He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Knowsley Magistrates’ Court this Thursday.

Former Latics boss big Joe Royle commented that Ward was the best non-league player he had ever seen and named him as one of the players in his best side during his time at the club.
