Moore has a little pop at Day

Ronnie Moore dropped Chris Day for the visit of Port Vale and also had a little pop at his commitment. Moore admitted that ever present Day was not the only player guilty of defensive mistakes but insisted he should take the major part of the blame for Athletic’s “embarrassing” defensive record.

Moore said, “We’ve been trying long enough to get somebody in, so it’s time to make a change. Chris Day has had it too easy, and I think that has been shown in some of his performances. With the players we’ve got in defence, it’s hard to understand how we’ve conceded so many goals. For a side in our position it’s embarrassing. The majority of us know the main reason for it, so hopefully a new ‘keeper will give more confidence to the players at the back.”

Lee Grant started the game and virtually the first piece of action for the new keeper was to pick the ball out of the net after the only goal of the game bounced in front of him and over his body for the match winner.
