Moore hunts for players

New boss Ronnie Moore has wasted no time in hunting for players to strengthen the team in their fight against relegation. He has already made enquiries about a right-sided midfielder from the Championship and he hopes to have at least one new face in the team to entertain Port Vale on Saturday.

Paul Warne, whom Moore worked with for over seven years at Rotherham, is also close to signing for his old boss but it is not expected that a deal for the 31 year old can be made before the weekend.

Moore said, “We won’t get Paul Warne (pictured) in time for Saturday because they are a bit short at the moment and might need him to be involved. But hopefully it will happen next week, and he’s the sort of player who could become a favourite with our fans. I know the lad very well. He plays wide right or through the middle and his game is all about energy, energy, energy. Yesterday was my first day at the club, but I spent all afternoon ringing managers because I want to get somebody in before weekend. There’s a big possibility with another lad from the Championship, who also plays down the right.”

“I know Lee Croft did a great job when he was here on loan – we fancied him at Rotherham as well – but he hasn’t really been replaced. We’re also a bit short up front because Scott Vernon being out for three to four weeks could mean we are lacking a natural goalscorer. That’s something else I’m working on at the moment, although 50-odd other managers will be doing the same.”

Moore added, “I told the lads what I expect from them and pointed out that this is a fresh start. I don’t care what happened with the previous manager. There are a lot of players out of contract in the summer and if anyone has a chip on their shoulder they know what will happen. We don’t have the biggest squad in the world, but everyone is bright and positive about the challenge. It’s tough and I can make no guarantees about what will happen, but I can’t wait to get out there on Saturday.”
