Oldham Athletic director Anthony Gee has confirmed the League One side are in talks with a number of investors. Chairman Simon Corney is Oldham's major shareholder, having saved the club in 2004 with Simon Blitz and Danny Gazal. Corney has previously stated he is open to offers for the Latics, but Gee confirmed the latest talks were over possible funds coming into the club rather than a new owner.
“There is no imminent buyer on the horizon,” he told BBC Radio Manchester. “I am in negotiations and discussions with maybe five groups at the moment, but I don't want anyone to get too excited. It is a slow process and people throw offers at you because everyone wants to own a football club. When you ask them to put their money where their mouth is, usually they go running a thousand miles away.”
New Oldham manager Stephen Robinson has revealed a phone call with Sean O'Driscoll, who also joined the coaching staff this summer, persuaded him to leave his position as Northern Ireland assistant. Robinson is the sixth new boss at SportsDirect.com Park in the last three years and has already made six signings after starting pre-season with just seven contracted players.
“It was a just a challenge that I thought was too good to turn down,” he said. “I had two very good jobs with Motherwell and Northern Ireland and I'd been quite successful with both of them. I had a phone call from Sean O'Driscoll and I just thought when I spoke to Simon Corney and the board it was just an opportunity, a blank canvas, to do something and that excited me.”
