A huge new sponsorship deal is being negotiated that could see Boundary Park renamed. Sportswear giants Sports Direct are close to sealing a five-year agreement which would see Newcastle United supremo Mike Ashley take over the running of the club shop which is planned to be moved to the new, still under construction, stand.

Part of the package includes that Sondico, a subsidiary of Sports Direct, are to manufacture Athletic’s shirts which would be sponsored by Sports Direct. The existing deal with JD Sports comes to an end on 31st May and the new deal could result in the Magpies heading to the Latics for a pre-season friendly. It would also forge a relationship between the two clubs that may see some of Newcastle’s younger players coming in on loan.

The proposed deal is thought to be the biggest commercial agreement in the Latics’s history and may approach seven figures over the duration of the contract.
