Latics director Mike Newton has stepped down from the club for a second time. The New York-based businessman resigning from the board at the end of the 2009/10 season but then returned.

Newton said, “Simon wants to restructure the board with a view to the future direction of the club and to that end I offered to step down. I have a lot of respect for Simon. He is a deep personal friend and I hope everything works out well for him at the club. I have enjoyed my time at Oldham and wish the fans well. I have put in a meaningful amount of money and will not be taking anything out. It will be written off as a donation. Contrary to what some may think, I am not looking to buy Port Vale FC, though I want to remain in football in some capacity. I would be happy to serve on a board again if I felt I could make a contribution and it was the right opportunity.”

Corney said of Newton, “Mike has been instrumental in helping to shape various aspects of the club. Due to the day-to-day commitments he has in New York, he hasn’t been able to get across so often. But when he has been here, he has provided useful insight.”

The fans offer a different perspective and most are quick to comment on how the club has demised and they cannot see what 'useful insight' he has provided.
