Athletic played to a 1-1 draw in the pre-season friendly at home to Premiership new boys Hull City. The manager was delighted with the work rate of the team and with the way that they fought back after going a goal down through a deceptive header from Caleb Folan. Lewis Alessandra scored from close on the 70th minute mark to earn the home side the draw that they deserved.

John Sheridan told Latics World, "Like the Derby game, tonight was a good test and we had to work hard to try and stop Hull scoring. They have players who can make runs and pop up in dangerous positions, but we managed to limit their chances barring the goal and Greg Fleming's save at the end. I'm pleased we got something out of the game because I never like losing, whether it be in a friendly or a senior game."

"The goal was a soft one from our point of view because it started off from a throw-in right in front of myself and Tommy Wright. But we have a lot of new players and we're still teaching them where we want to send the opposition, so it's not too much of a concern at the moment. The lads never gave up, but we must learn to not chase the ball as much and sell ourselves in the first ten minutes, especially against teams like us who keep the ball. But it was very pleasing that we managed to battle back and get something. Neal Eardley's played in a great free kick and Lewis finished it well."
