Out of the relegation spots

Curtis Main scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over high flying Walsall. The goal took the Latics out of the relegation spots by two points and knocked another nail in the relegation coffin of his parent club, Doncaster Rovers, from whom he is on loan. Manager John Sheridan admitted that the result was the best he has had since his return as manager.

He said, “I don’t think we played well but that is probably the best result since I’ve been here because we kept going to get something out of the game. I wasn’t happy at all in the first half, the lads will tell you that as well. I thought we were poor and very flat. I kept the same team after a good performance against Swindon on Tuesday so I thought I’d do the same but we were flat and I was thinking I made the wrong decision. One or two of them needed to get going because I don’t think we were in it in the first half as a team. My goalkeeper has played well because he is there when he is needed and made two great saves in the first half. I had a little go at them at half time and I got a response. I thought we upped the tempo a bit, got in the game a lot more, we got the goal, which was a great goal, and you have something to hold on to. We raised our game, got in their faces a little bit more, played quicker and created one or two chances. We got the goal and we’re not bad at keeping clean sheets so, when you do that, there is always a chance of winning.”

“It’s good that teams have got to win games to get above us now and that’s not happened in a long time so we just carry on what we are doing. I want to win as many games before the end of the season, and get the points on board to make us safe in this league. The lads are showing a lot of fight to keep us in the division.”
