Athletic followed up their 0-0 season opening draw against Stockport with a 1-0 defeat in the first round of the League Cup at Brunton Park. In a game watched by 2,509 spectators it took a last minute headed goal from Scott Dobie to put Carlisle through. After the match and speaking of the changes Dave Penney told Latics Player, "Pawel and Keigan had worked their socks off on a red hot day on Saturday and we just thought we'd freshen it up. We had good first half possession, but didn't really create chances, which is frustrating. Defensively we looked ok and we put them under a lot of pressure, we just need more composure in the final third."

Danny Whitaker was taken off in the 72nd minute and Penney continued, "Whit's is ok, he's had 5 stitches in his head but should train on Thursday. With Chris Taylor we have a bit of a worry. We'll have to keep assessing it, as it seems to settle down but as he tires it seems to cause him a problem. The results a disappointment that's for sure. Now we have to look forward to a real test of where we're at with two tough away trips in the league."
