Penney in no rush

New Latics boss Dave Penney is in no rush to sign players as he believes that the current reccession will give football clubs more bargaining power that they used to have. The number of players being released is reaching reaching record levels and he believes that a wide range of players will soon be available to sign.

He explained, "We are not going to rush our recruitment this year - there are lots of players out of contract this summer and we will pick the best we can afford. Everyone assumes that I will be going after Darlington's players as they've all been made available but that's not necessarily the case. We'll have a good look around in general and then select the players we need to strengthen the areas we have already identified."

"Most clubs are cutting back, and that means smaller squads and smaller wage bills. It's a club's market now and we hope to be able to pick some good players up. I have come in quickly and I've watched DVD's of the team, watched them train and spoken to a lot of people from around the game, including Joe. I know where I need to strengthen and I know the budget I have to achieve that. I have thrashed out the figures with the board, which helps as I know who we can and can't go after and who we can and can't keep. I'm speaking to two people at the moment and hopefully we can sort something out in the next couple of days. It's important I have people I trust and the two in question have been with me for the past three years. I expect to be able to announce something soon."
