Penney looks to challenge

Latics supremo Dave Penney has said he is looking forward to clashing swords with what he describes as the 'big four' in the coming season, the way he described Charlton, Southampton Norwich and Leeds.

Penney told BBC Radio Manchester, "The three that've come down have all got fan bases of 20,000-plus so their budgets will be much better than average for the division. So you look forward to going to those places and upsetting the opposition, going to the big grounds and playing in front of 20-odd or 30,000 supporters and putting up a good account of yourselves. We just, hopefully, play attractive, high-tempo football, get as many points as quickly as possible and see where that takes us."

"If you look at the history for the last two seasons Oldham have started very well but, after the Christmas period, they've tailed off. So we're hoping that doesn't happen again. We're hoping we're fetching in younger, fresher players that can hopefully last the course or the distance and hopefully can finish the season as it was started last season. Our main target is to get 52 points as quickly as possible; that means you're safe in this division. Then you try to get to the mid-70s quickly for the play-offs. If you get mid-80s you've a fair chance of getting automatic promotion. But we don't say we'll do this, we don't make false promises."
