Peterborough edge win

The Latics stumbled to a disappointing 2-1 reverse at Peterborough on Saturday. It was a result which flattered The Posh as a draw would have been a more fair result as the visitors were well worthy of a point. Boss Lee Johnson couldn’t believe that his team didn’t manage to take a point home after the encounter as they pushed the home side hard in the dying minutes.

The Latics were by far the better side in the first half but a defensive error and an inexplicable penalty, conceded by Oxley, gave The Posh a two goal cushion and it looked like the game was over as the game started to petered out. To the credit of the visitors they pushed hard and got a goal back through substitute MacDonald. The home fans were whistling for the referee to end the game and it finished just as James Tarkowski failed to connect with the ball which would have earned a deserved point.

Johnson said, “How Tarky’s not put his foot on that one at the end I will never know. He will have nightmares about it. Territorially, I thought we dominated the game pretty much from start to finish and the only disappointment was the two bad goals we conceded. I didn’t know what to do at the end because I was so pleased with the performance, but so down with the result. There’s a way to lose: last week against Walsall wasn’t it, but this week was. It was a fantastic performance. We gave the fans something (358 visiting) to shout about. I think they will go home appreciative that we gave it a good go and they can trust this team will keep going.”
