Philliskirk raves about his crop of youngsters

Tony Philliskirk has been talking about the talented crop of successful youngsters that are passing through the youth set up at Boundary Park. This season has seen a record nine players turn professional and Philliskirk said, β€œIt's our remit to provide two or three young lads every year, but to see nine turn professional is amazing. This group of lads have enjoyed outstanding success, and I'm absolutely delighted the club is supporting them. The youth programme has really made a name for itself because all our games, including at the Centre of Excellence, are watched by scouts from the Premiership. We don't want to lose good young players, but lads like Micah Richards (Manchester City) can bring in vital money for the club."

When you consider our recent first-team squad has included Will Haining (pictured), Danny Hall, Scott Vernon and Adam Griffin, plus all the younger lads who are coming through, it's clear the system has been working well for some time. It all bodes well for the future and, as well as providing players, we are putting assets on the pitch. There will come a stage when we're less successful, but the lads who are turning pro have got their rewards for showing the right attitude to go with their talent. They are an exceptional bunch with a desire to better themselves, and they have responded to the principles and ethics we try to instil. They are leaving us now and joining the senior set-up, so they have to realise the hard work is just beginning. But we've had unbelievable results for the last three years, so I'm not surprised so many are being kept on.”
