Poggsy out for around three weeks

Les Pogliacomi, who left the field after 13 minutes of the game at Tranmere, is set to be out of action for about three weeks. Poggsy complained of a groin strain immediately after taking a goal kick and the Latics physiotherapist has now determined that the injury is a Grade 1 strain of the 'Adductor Longus' muscle, which is the main kicking muscle in the groin area. The Australian keeper has started the last 61 league and cup games for Athletic and his absence will be a big blow.

Brian Talbot is looking for a back-up keeper but stresses that any new signing would be an understudy to Craig Mawson who replaced Poggsy at Prenton Park. Mawson has impressed in his time at Boundary Park but had only played nine league games (all for Halifax) before stepping in at Tranmere. Talbot said, “It’s a blow to lose your number-one goalkeeper, but this gives Craig Mawson his big chance. If you’ve brought someone into the club and asked them to impress you, it’s only right they should be given the opportunity. Craig wants to prove himself and he’s our number one for the time being, so we’ll find out if he’s good enough. He did nothing wrong on his debut and was blameless for Tranmere’s goals.”

Mawson will start at Doncaster on Saturday and should make his home debut in the big game against Tottenham, which should be quite a baptism for him!
