Preview: Oldham Athletic Vs. Chesterfield

Last updated : 01 May 2004 By Maca
Roy McFarland’s men will travelling over the Pennines in search of points to aid their own survival bid and so won’t be any pushovers. Chesterfield have only been beaten once in six matches but have had a similar problem to Oldham recently that they have only won one of those games. Oldham have only lost once in ten games now winning three of them. Tomorrow is the final home game of the season for Oldham so there should be a big turnout from the Oldham fans. Chesterfield are expected to bring 2,000 fans over to help cheer on their side to victory but I doubt we’ll see that.

Previous Match

The last match between the two sides ended in a 1-1 draw. Steve Blatherwick headed home from a corner after Pogliacomi failed to claim. In the second half Calvin Zola equalised for the Latics, getting infront of Muggleton to simply tap home.

Team News

Jermaine Johnson has played his last game of the season for Oldham as he is serving a 2 match suspension, possibly his last also if his contract isn’t renewed in the summer. Scott Vernon will replace him in the starting lineup. Chris Killen has recovered from his hamstring injury but he isn’t match fit and so isn’t in the squad. Matty Appleby is also back in training at last but he won’t be risked this season. A surprise inclusion to the squad is 17 year old Kelvin Lomax, in his first season as a trainee who can play anywhere in defence but his strongest position is at right-back. Brian Talbot included him after an impressive display in the Lancashire FA Youth Cup against Burnley.

Oldham Athletic Squad: Pogliacomi, Holden, Haining, Hall, Griffin, Murray, Bonner, Sheridan, Eyres, Eyre, Vernon, Corry, Clegg, Lomax, Cooksey, Crowe, Zola, Beherall

Chesterfield will still be out with former Oldham player Mark Allott with an injury but there will be no shortage of ex-Oldham players, David Reeves, Mark Innes and Matt O’Halloran are in the squad. Chris Brandon is a concern with “mysterious cramps” and Tcham N’Toya could replace him in the starting lineup. Roy McFarland will try and keep his winning team from last weekend if he can.

Chesterfield Squad: Muggleton, O’Hare, Dawson, Blatherwick, Davies, Hudson, Niven, Innes, Brandon, Hurst, Reeves, N’Toya, Robinson, Howson, Richmond, DeBolla, O’Halloran

How Oldham Can Stay Up?

Oldham beat Chesterfield
Oldham draw with Chesterfield
Oldham lose to Chesterfield and either Brentford lose to Grimsby Town, Peterborough United fail to win Blackpool or Rushden & Diamonds fail to beat Colchester United.

It is the final home game of the season and we aren’t quite safe yet so get to the game tomorrow and get behind the lads one final time at home. It could be a few players last game at the club so this would be a good time if ever to say your farewells or to plead them to stay at the club. The boys will be playing in next seasons new home kit for the first time. The Oldham Chronicle Van will be making an appearance to distribute sweets and other items to promote their 150th anniversary, family tickets are also available, check Friday’s paper for details. At half-time the Youth team will parade infront of the fans showing off their silverware in another fine season
