Royle can't buy a win

Manager Joe Royle is still looking for his first win. He was left disillusioned after Crewe Alexandra pulled defeat from their grasp with a last minute equaliser at Boundary Park which no-one could have begrudged them. Reuben Hazell gave the Latics the lead in the first half but it was Byron Moore who broke the hearts of Athletic when he scored an 89th minute equaliser.

Royle said, "There was lots to be pleased with; the shoots of recovery were well and truly there. We scored a good goal through Reuben and then missed three or four good chances to go further ahead. Therein lies the problem - we can't kill sides off. Sean Gregan (pictured) - who was outstanding and has been since I joined the club - sliced a clearance and we didn't deal with it after that. Then Reuben tried to get the ball back to the keeper and instead it's landed at their lad's feet."

"There's lots to be pleased with, but we still have problems at both ends. I know this - as a striker myself I know that if Neal Eardley has the ball at his feet I'm going to get in the box, but we don't think goals. Neal has played very well in the last few games, as have Reuben and Sean. Kieran Lee had a fantastic start but blew up later due to a lack of match fitness. Not having a reserve team has really killed us this year and that will have to be sorted next season."
