Season Over

Athletic's season is finally over as they lost 3-1 at Blackpool in the play off semi-final game at Bloomfield Road. The Seasiders were fortunate to take a first half lead, a lead which was increased to 2-0 in the second half but the Latics didn't lay down even after the second goal went in. They battled on and both teams were robbed of a goal through dubious off side decisions. The home side finished stronger although the 3-1 score line flattered them. Matt Wolfenden scored the only Latics goal with an effort that went in off the underside of the bar with seven minutes left.

The game is about scoring goals and over the two legs Blackpool scored scored five goals and the Latics scored just two so it can be admitted that the best team won on the overall play. John Sheridan can be proud of what the team achieved this season and the fans have played their part by being absolutely fantastic in a much improved season. It was to be a season of consolidation with a new manager and a new team and a top ten finish would have been an achievement. To reach the play-offs was a phenominal success and it must be said that next season MUST be the year to go that one better.

Shez, his management team and all the playing staff should be congratulated for giving the fans such an enjoyable season even though they might be feeling a little disappointed at the moment, but with a tiny squad and an inexperienced manager and we've exceeded all expectations.
