Shared spoils leaves Latics 4 points clear

The Latics trip to Oakwell got off to a dreadful start as Barnsley had the ball in the net within the first five minutes when Johnson headed in past Pogliacomi. The goal awoke the Latics who then took the game to Barnsley. A penalty should have been awarded to the visitors in the 20th. minute but the referee declined to award it. The pressure from the Latics eventually paid off when Killen (pictured) looped in a header from a Tierney cross before the half time break.

The Latics took the lead in the 65th. minute when Beckett again improved his worth with a well taken header from a Kilkenny free kick. It looked like the three points were in the bag with the Latics playing well and Barnsley just going through the motions, but a bizarre goal gave the home side a share of the spoils. A 30 yard cross in the 78th. minute caught Pogliacomi in no-mans land and it was a surprise to everyone when it landed in the net. Push as they may for a winner it wasn’t to be and it left Oldham 4 points clear of the drop zone with three games left to play.

In the after match press conference, a disappointed Ronnie Moore said, “I thought we were the better side today. I was comfortable. Sometimes you're a bag of nerves and other times you're not and today we were that much in control of the game, Barnley never really hurt us. The crowd were on their backs, so dissapointing. In the dressing room it felt like a defeat. The players are deflated when they could have been elated. But it's 6 games undefeated, and it's going to be a hell of a game at our place next week. I thought the supporters were brilliant again. They got behind us and we certainly need them next week that's for sure. I'm pleased with the way we're playing but just disappointed that we're not professional enough at times but, having said that, I can't fault them. They've given their all, and if the keeper makes a mistake, you're going to get punished.”
