Sheridan pledges his troth

If John Sheridan does not win the fight to get the permanent managers job at Boundary Park he has vowed to remain at the club whatever. Saturday sees the end to his trial managerial perion and after the Tranmere game the new owners will need to make a decision on the way forward for the club. Sheridan said, “I’ve made it clear I want the job, but I still want to be here if that isn’t the case. I like the club, I like the people and I like the supporters. Whatever happens, there’s no particular reason I would want to work anywhere else. I’ve been honoured to get this chance as manager and, having done the job for a few weeks, I’ve really got a buzz for it. I’m new to all this but I know a bit about football and can hopefully pass on what I’ve learned during 23 years in the game.”

Although Sheridan has steadied the ship following the sad departure of Iain Dowie the new owners may still appoint someone above him but Shez may still be kept on as second in charge to a more experienced contender. Shez has only made loan signings since his promotion to acting manager but Athletic have 11 full time professionals due to have contracts renegotiated which include Paul Murray, Will Haining, Les Pogliacomi, Danny Hall, Ernie Cooksey, Darren Sheridan, Danny Boshell, Adam Griffin and David Eyres.

Sheridan added, “Everyone knows the team needs strengthening in a lot of departments, and I know in my own mind what they are. We could do with five, six or even seven new players to make the squad more competitive in our league. Experience is what we need because that’s what the successful teams always have in the second division. Young lads can come in and do well, but they need people around them. And hopefully we can get new blood into the camp sooner rather than later.”
