Shez full of praise

John Sheridan was full of praise after he watched his side easily push aside any threat that Cheltenham had to offer in Saturday's home victory. The team rose to the occasion and proved that their early league success is no fluke and they are truly top of the league on merit. Latics team of the past have usually followed up successful results like the away win at Leeds with a shambolic display against lesser teams. The Cheltenham game was different as they continued their fine form with a convincing 4-0 thrashing which in reality could have been many more. The first half offered four good chances to take the lead, two of the efforts hitting the post, before Lee Hughes hit the first of his hat-trick just before the half time whistle. Hughes completed his three goals before Danny Whitaker got his first goal for the club five minutes from full time.

Sheridan commented, "The main thing was getting the three points at home, but our performance was spot on. I told the lads to be wary after the Leeds game - no disrespect to Cheltenham - and the lads responded in exactly the manner I wanted. We could have scored two or three in the first half. then eventually got one and the way we played and moved the ball in the second half was top drawer. But Mark Crossley made a crucial save for us at 2-0. That was their only real chance of the game and would have given them a bit of belief if it had gone in."

"We're not getting carried away - I'll make sure of that. We'll enjoy being top and I've told the lads to enjoy it because there's moans and groans when you're at the bottom. Four out of the next five games are away from home and it's an important time for us, but I'm pleased with the way we're going."
