Dean Furman was forced to sit out the first match of their African Cup of Nations opener. Athletic’s 24-year-old captain was placed on the bench as South Africa started their campaign with a scoreless draw against Cape Verde.
He has been a regular in the team in warm up matches and he featured in the final match against Algeria but coach Gordon Igesund left him out of the starting the line-up and he never even got to make an appearance as substitute.
