Korey Smith has put himself into contention to be Athletic’s captain for the up-coming season. Smith is 22 and took the armband against Curzon Ashton even though there were more experienced players on the field.
Latics' boss Lee Johnson has said he hasn’t made a decision yet about the captaincy but admitted, “Korey is certainly up there in the running. He is someone who has won this division, he is a good talker and someone the lads and the fans respect. I respect him. He is one of four or five who are options for captain.”
