Snow games from the past

Last updated : 13 January 2010 By The Chairman

With the big freeze taking control of the country (34 league matches were postponed last weekend alone) we thought it might be fun to remember some of the snow stories from the past. An excellent reference book for similar Latics stories is Oldham Athletic "On This Day" and we are including some excerpts from the book below. Enjoy your read.

"Oldham Athletic - On This Day"

Saturday 11th January 1913

Bolton Wanderers visited a bitterly cold and snow covered Boundary Park for a third-round FA Cup game. Oliver Tummon scored twice to give the Latics a 2-0 win and set up a fourth round game at home to Nottingham Forest.

Wednesday 24th December 1962

Southport were the visitors to a cold and snow covered Boundary Park and they went away with a stinging 11-0 defeat, Athletic's record score to this day and equaling their highest ever number of goals in one game. Bert Lister led the goal fest with six, Colin Whittaker scored a hat-trick, while John Colquhoun and Bob Ledger completed the rout. Athletic had led by 9 goals as early as the 53rd minute in a remarkable game. Master schemer Bobby Johnstone architected the whole proceedings and was very unfortunate not to get on the score sheet himself. 14,662 witnessed the demolition.

Saturday 16th March 1974

A huge contingent of Latics followers made the trip to Derbyshire to take on high flying Chesterfield. Athletic were on an all time record run of ten consecutive wins and were looking for their eleventh but it wasn't to be. The Spireites won 1-0 and the travelling faithful had a miserable, long and dangerous trip home through the snow filled Pennines.
