Squad even thinner as Latics travel to Glanford Park

With Berehall, Appleby and Clegg out during all of pre-season and Eyres, Holden and Killen joining them on the sick list, the last thing the Latics needed was another major player being crocked. However, 41 minutes into Saturday's season opener, that is exactly what happened.

After a half-fit Killen started and limped off part way through the 1st half, Latics defender Will Haining followed shortly afterwords when his defensive clearance led to a nasty injury.

Hooking the ball to safety, Haining managed to twist his ankle and now has swelling and bruising which will definitely rule him out of Tuesday night's trip to Scunthorpe. Both Killen and Haining also remain big doubts for Saturday, although David Eyres should be fit to return by the weekend along with Dean Holden.

The question for Tuesday night though is who will play? It seems unlikely that Dowie will risk Eyres and Holden. And the latest blow comes in the form of Ndawi, as Bolton manager Sam Allardyce has refused permission for him to play or he would then be cup-tied for the rest of the competition.

That means Dowie has no recognised 1st team defenders or strikers to play (depending on if you class Vernon and Curier as one of these yet.) And he also is talking about the odd trainee being used, so all in all, it's going to be a sorry state of a team that arrives in Scunny on Tuesday night.

Team prediction - 4-4-2 GK: Pogliacomi, DF: Walker, Tierney, Forde, Murray, MD: Roca, O'Hallaran, Boshell, Eyre, FD: Fleming, Curier

My prediction is that Dowie will rest Hall, Sheridan and Vernon giving other youngsters a chance.
