Strongest squad possible for Burnley clash

Athletic travel to Burnley tonight for the second round Carling Cup clash and boss John Sheridan is hoping that his team can recover from Saturdays league disappointment and go on to make some progress in the cup. Shez will be taking his strongest possible squad from his injury hit list of players.

Sheridan said, "The Carling Cup is very important because it's great for confidence if you can beat a couple of decent teams. This is a good game for the fans because it's a local derby and I'm sure we'll have good support, so we are going there hopeful of the right result. As Wycombe proved last year, if you get a bit of luck in the draw it's possible for a lower league team to go a long way. And as anyone who has played football would tell you, getting around the quarter-finals or semi-finals is a great feeling."

"Realistically you aren't going to get there, but it has happened on many occasions in the past and our ambitions are no different. The pressure is off because no-one expects us to beat Burnley, but I definitely believe we can get something from the game."

It is expected that Gary McDonald (pictured) will return as a starter after being sub for all the previous games this season.
