Table topping Latics continue in early race for promotion

John Sheridan's Latics continued their fight for an automatic promotion place with a 2-0 win over the franchied Wimbledon football team at Boundary Park. The manager was impressed with the way his team fought against a team that will cause some problems to much of their opposition this season.

The goals were scored by Lee Hughes in the eighth minute, and man of the match Mark Allott (pictured) who got a last minute strike to seal the win. Goalkeeper Mark Crossley also played his part as he saved Mark Wright's disputed spot kick in the first half to restore some justice.

Sheridan told Latics World, "It was a good game - MK Dons are a very good team and they made it hard for us. But I'm very pleased with how we went about the job. As we're top of the league teams will come here and try to make things difficult, so to get through the game and get the result we wanted was excellent. Lee Hughes scored a fantastic goal to give us the lead, and thankfully Mark saved their penalty soon after. If that had've gone in, they would have certainly thought they could go on and get something."

"I told the lads at half-time I thought they could raise their game, and we upped the tempo and looked strong in the second half. They had chances, but so did we. Their keeper's made a sensational stop on Lewis Alessandra and then pulled off a wonder save to keep Hughesy out. But then Mark Allott popped up with a great strike, and it's good to see we're getting goals from different areas of the pitch."

"Lee made it look easy, but it certainly wasn't. It was an excellent finish and that's what he's all about. And Mark's an experienced pro who is always a seven or eight out of ten every week. He gets on with the job and deserved the man of the match award today."
