As expected, Brian Talbot has been named as the new Athletic manager and his first job will be to get some players in to stave off any lingering threat of relegation. Simon Corney said, “There are still financial worries to deal with and people have to remember where the club has just come from. But, without going overboard with a huge budget, Brian will certainly have money to spend. His first job is to keep us in division two, and he can bring people in before the deadline. We will back him all the way – we wouldn’t have brought him here if we didn’t think he was a good judge of players. Brian knows a lot of good people when it comes to making signings, and he has already expressed some ideas on that front. His arrival is a very exciting move for the club. We are absolutely delighted to have our man in place.”

“We interviewed a lot of people and they all brought something good to the table, but Brian was the board’s overwhelming choice. He spent seven years at Rushden and Diamonds, which shows the kind of loyalty and longevity we wanted in a new manager. We have long-term ideas to give the club stability, with Brian very much a part of those plans. He is someone we feel confident of working with, not just on the playing side but on our overall view of Oldham Athletic’s future. This was a crucial appointment, so both parties needed to be happy. And I think Brian liked our recent history of playing at a higher level. That’s where we want to return under Brian’s management, but I also want to thank John Sheridan and David Eyres for the work they did in caretaker charge.”
