Ten professionals to get paid off

Ten of Athletic’s professionals will be asked to terminate the contracts in the latest move to slash costs at Boundary Park. The players are currently not named and it was the playing staff themselves who decided that some of them
would have to have their contracts paid off. Manager Iain Dowie has the difficult task of collating the list and informing the individuals. The list will include most of the eight players who were given free transfers.

Dermot Power, the expert brought in to help ease Athletic’s crisis said, “We are pleased that the players came forward as a group and unanimously said we should look to take 10 from their midst. Savings have to come from by far the
most significant area of expenditure at the club, which is players’ wages. The players concerned face a calculated gamble as they can reach a compromise over their contract and leave before it was due to terminate.”

Athletic need savings of at least £1million by the end of the season and other cost saving inituatives will probably be brought in before then. Free transfers were recently given to Gary Kelly, Stuart Balmer, Shaun Garnett, Danny Boshell, Wayne Gill, David Reeves, Tom Whittle and Joe Doran.
