Thompson delighted to sign for Latics

John Thompson is delighted at signing for the Latics in what he considers to be an "excellent" Oldham team.

He confessed to Latics World, "I think I'd got to the point in my career where I needed a change. I'd been at Forest for eight years, and that's a long time. Then the chance arose to come here, the manager sold it to me and I'm really excited about the coming season. I can play anywhere across the back four or as a holding midfielder, but my favourite position is centre back and that's where I played while on loan at Tranmere. I really enjoyed my time there but then the chance came to come to Oldham and I think this is a better opportunity for me."

"I had other options at the time, too, but I've chosen to come here and I'm very happy with that decision. John Sheridan has told me I will be playing primarily at centre back and that's another one of the reasons I signed. Oldham looked excellent when I played against them for both Forest and Tranmere, and again that's another reason I came here. They were excellent in all three games and thoroughly deserved to win them all, and were then unlucky not to go on and get promotion. Hopefully with myself and a few other lads coming in we can get there, because the Championship is where everyone wants to be. We've made some very good signings such as Mark Crossley and Lee Hughes, and I think this is an exciting time for Oldham fans."
