When youngster Neal Trotman moved to Preston and in the process giving Athletic a £500,000 windfall, he became the biggest transfer fee at Boundary Park since Carl Serrant left the club in 1998.Manager John Sheridan told Latics World, "Neal's got his reward for doing very well this season. I had a bit of chat with him beforehand and I think it's all come as a bit of a shock to the lad as he's only played 20 or so senior games. But he's come in and one or two people have noticed him and think they can make him an even better player.

"He's a good defender who must now prove himself at a higher level against better players. I hope he does well because he's a nice kid and I like him a lot. But from here on in it's about proving yourself, not about big-money moves and better wages. I'd like to wish him all the best for the future, I'm sure he'll do very well."
