Vernon Signs

Scott Vernon (21) is to stay at Boundary Park until June 2008 after signing a new deal. Vernon was the Latics leading scorer in 2003-04 with 14 goals and he also knocked in 13 goals last season. Blackpool have for long admired the young striker after he went there on loan but they wouldn’t stump up any money to sign him although he hit 3 goals in 4 games.

Although Ronnie Moore and his assistant have seen little of Vernon due to injury John Breckin said, “Scott has loads of potential and he definitely one for the future. It was difficult for us and the lad when we first came here because he was recovering from a cheekbone injury, but we’ve been impressed by what he’s done in training and other people at the club have said good things about him. A three-year contract is a good bit of business for the club because other parties were interested in Scott and it also gives him some security. It’s another part of the squad-building plan completed.”

Vernon told the official website, “It has taken longer than I expected but I am delighted to have signed for the Latics. I always wanted to sign for the club, but had to wait to see what the best option was. When Oldham came in with the offer I had no hesitation in signing for club.”
