After the disappointment of losing out on Paul Heffernan the Latics moved swiftly and completed the signing of controversial Blackpool midfielder Richie Wellens (pictured) who completed a two year deal. Wellens ended a five year spell at Bloomfield Road after joining them from Manchester United, where his chances were limited. Scott Vernon was part of the deal and he moves to the Seasiders on a similar two year deal but with the option of a further year. Vernon was the ace in the pack as Blackpool had a 50% sell on clause with United and a swap deal was too good an opportunity for them to miss. Vernon was a big hit with ‘Pool when h went on loan and they have been chasing him ever since. It looked like the deal would never materialise after Vernon signed a new deal at Boundary Park but as the saying goes, “It’s a funny old game is football......”
