Youngsters offered terms

Four of Athletic's second-year scholars have been offered one-year professional deals. Striker Ryan Brooke, goalkeeper Josh Ollerenshaw, defender Liam Dawson and midfielder Chris Rowney have all been offered terms for the coming season.

Midfielder Nathan Kilcourse has been told that he will be released at the end of the season and youth team boss Tony Philliskirk said, "Nathan has been told he will not be offered terms, but he can look himself in the mirror and tell himself he could not have done any more. He has not be retained for the 'right' reasons - footballing ones - he is a fantastic lad and I am sure he will have a great future career whether that's in football or not. Nathan has indicated he would like to consider a career in the Armed Forces and I would say he is ideally suited to this. He has been a pleasure to work with and we will be trying to help him out in whatever way we can."

Of the four being offered deals, Philliskirk said, "The four lads have really come on over the course of the second half of the season. They will get the chance to develop in the reserves next season and must be setting themselves the aim of pushing for first-team football towards the end of next season. The lads have done very well, but they must understand that this is just the second step on what is a very long ladder. They haven't made it yet. They will be working with the senior staff next season and will find themselves playing against and training with established professionals."
