The Latics bad cup luck continued on Saturday when they suffered a giant-killing act at League Two Accrington Stanley in the first round of the FA Cup. It was the club's eighth successive first-round loss in knockout competitions spanning back over two years and it will come as a big blow as Athletic were looking for a good cup run he help fill the coffers but it's not to be again! The Latics found themselves three goals down early in the second half but Warren Feeney and Dale Stephens both scored as the Latics staged a late fight back. They also had a goal disallowed in the dying minutes from Feeney and Paul Black was unlucky as he saw his shot come back off a post.
Manager Paul Dickov was bitterly disappointed and admitted that he was embarrassed but he gave full credit to the way Accrington played. He said, "Give credit to them as they wanted to win it more than we did. That is what I am embarrassed about. I don't want any of my teams associated with a performance like that. We spoke to the players before the game about attitude and desire and Accrington wanted to win it more than we did in the first half. I told the players at half time they ought to be embarrassed that a 17-year-old kid (Carl Winchester), who was making his debut, was our stand-out player."
