The Latics continued their recent good run with a remarkable win at Bradford. New signing Neil Kilkenny couldn’t have hoped for a better start as he scored a brace on his debut for the team. The game was a bitter clash with bad tempers being the norm for the day. Windass had levelled for Bradford before Summerbee was red carded for a second bookable offence. This was to be the turning point of the game as Killen (pictured) scored minutes later with a side footer. Ten minutes from the whistle the game was sealed when Kilkenny got his second.

Manager Brian Talbot said, “That was as good as we have played since I took over. The result was fully deserved and there is no doubt the best team won. But I was disappointed to go in 1-1 at half time. We dominated for 30 minutes and they couldn't get the ball. Then they go and score from a set piece. But our football was first class. It was essentially an all-round team effort with everybody playing their part. They did the shirt proud. It is early days yet but we are playing properly at last. Every man stood his ground and showed that they wanted to play for the manager and the club. The three loan players, Croft, Hughes and Kilkenny all played well. Kilkenny is only 18 and that was his first full League game. When he gets hold of the ball he dictates situations and is cool as well. Chris Killen, who got his first goal in three games, led the line well. It was touch and go whether he was going to play because of a calf strain and now we have to try our best to keep him on the pitch. We have played well in parts this season but that was the first time we have done it for the full 90 minutes.”
