Rene Howe's first goal for Bristol Rovers gave npower League One's basement club a 1-0 win over Oldham.

The striker, on loan from Peterborough, netted from close range from Will Hoskins' curling ball into the box on 73 minutes.

The Latics had their chances and hit the post twice through Oumare Tounkara and Sam Mantom on 65 minutes.

Filipe Morais looked certain to score from the rebound when Mantom's free-kick came back off the woodwork, but somehow blazed over from six yards.

It was the moment of good fortune Rovers needed to record only their second win in 19 league games. But they showed great spirit throughout and edged a close game.

Oldham goalkeeper Ben Amos made a fine save from Gavin Williams 10 minutes from time before Rovers survived a nervy finish to clinch the points.
