The Latics continued their recent upturn in form with a valuable 2-1 win at Carlisle United. The have now lost just one game, a 2-0 reverse at Huddersfield which was undeserved, in their last five games and finally look like they should have enough points to stave off any lingering threats of relegation.

Lewis Guy put the visitors ahead when he slotted a low shot home in the 55th. minute and son after it was 2-0 after a good run by Deane Smalley (pictured). Dale Stevens was on hand to pick up the pieces after the Carlisle keeper knocked Smalley's cross to his feet.

Carlisle did pull a goal back but it was finger biting time for the Latics following of 355 supporters although the team managed to hang on to record their first success at Brunton Park for 25 years and take a very useful three points home.

Manager Dave Penney, though delighted with the win, is still taking nothing to chance and his after game comment was a cautious, "Everybody was saying 50 points would be enough, but I never did and I am not so sure after today's results. There wasn't much football played as the pitch was awful and it was blowing a gale, but we battled away. It is a tough place to come to so we are delighted to have picked up three points, especially the way other results have gone. The first half was a non-event for both sides, but we got a positive reaction in the second half when we put them under pressure and were more positive running with the ball.and tried to get it wide."
