Latics 1-2 Doncaster

It does seem typical, rather ironically, of Manchester City. Beat a Premiership team over fifty places above you in the grand scheme of things one week. Then lose at home the following week to a team mid-table in League One.

But that's what has happened to Oldham Athletic. Gregg Blundell and the wonderfully-named Jermaine McSporran both scored to give Doncaster Rovers a 2-0 lead. Scott Vernon scored - again - but only proved to be a consolation as Latics missed quite a few opportunities.

After Doncaster scored in the first minute, Kevin Betsy should have equalised in the sixth. He shot wide from close range, though had the goal been a barn door he would have hit the target. Kevin was pretty good today, but either hit the stand or the Rovers goalkeeper. Scott Vernon also missed a couple of chances, and Chris Killen made a welcome return to action. But he could not reverse Oldham's fortunes either.

Speaking to the official website, Athletic's assistant manager Tony Philliskirk said that "what happened in the last kick of the game, when there was a scramble and it was volleyed over the bar, just epitomised the game for us today."

"To be honest, I don't think we did enough to win the game...On the balance of the play, we probably had the best chances but we didn't make the goalkeeper work when the chances came."

Oldham had better get themselves up for their next game, a bottom-of-the-table clash away at Peterborough next week.
