LATICS STAY UP

All those crossed fingers, sightings of solitary magpies and four-leafed clovers came back to repay Oldham today.

The 2-1 win over Bradford City ensured that Athletic did not become the first former Premiership club to crash into the bottom division of the Football League Pyramid.

They first took the lead after three minutes. Guy Branston hoofed the ball downfield, which was latched onto by Luke Beckett. Chris Killen scored from Beckett's ensuing cross.

Had all scores remained the same, Oldham would have stayed up. But soon Latics were in the relegation zone. MK Dons scored against Tranmere to lead 1-0, and Dean Windass scored from a free-kick to equalise for Bradford.

There was no need to panic. Killen's through ball found, surprise surprise, Luke Beckett. That meant Beckett had scored six goals in nine games during his loan spell at Latics. Surely signing him permanently has to be a priority now for Ronnie Moore.

Thankfully Les Pogliacomi was on sparkling form to ensure Bradford didn't score again. With MK Dons scoring a late goal to beat Tranmere 2-1 it was imperative that Oldham didn't concede in the dying minutes of their season. Which they did not, so most of the 9381 Latics fans breathed a huge sigh of relief at the end.
