The Latics continued their pre-season warm up against Newcastle Town last night. The Latics got the best of the action early on and a Jermiane Johnson effort was finished poorly with Kelvin Lomax showing well. Rodney Jack opened the scoring with with a 25 yarder after 15 minutes. Good work from JJ resulted in Mark Arber hitting the bar and then Ernie Cooksey had a goal disallowed for offside 5 minutes from the whistle.

Brian Talbot brought on a whole new eleven players for the start of the second half and Chris Killen (pictured) made an immediate impact when he scored with his first touch, 20 seconds into the half. Kelvin Jack in goal gave an impressive display although he wasn’t called on too much. Town’s best effort was thwarted by Jack in the 65th. minute when he got down quickly and blocked with his body before Scott Vernon put the Latics three up with a well taken goal.

Oldham finished the game with ten men after Dave Beharall went off as a precaution. With 5 minutes left Vernon almost made it four. First, he had a fine header which was close but not close enough, then he had the ball in the net but it was ruled offside. Not a great encounter but a useful run-out before the visit of Leeds United on Friday night. A 3-0 win again would go down well!
