The Latics finished off their season with a point at already relegated Notts County to finish the season in 15th. place, an achievement in itself after the the last year or so of uncertainty and possible extinction. The first half was a non-entity with the Latics having the best of what little action there was. The game was witnessed by a large following of fancy dressed Latics faithful, determined to end the season in party mood irrespective of the result.

After Murray’s near miss in the 8th. minute the fans were in fine voice with a rousing chorus of ‘One Paul Murray’. The Latics took the lead in the 60th. minute when Murray laid on for Dean Holden (pictured) to rocket the ball into the roof of the net. Cue pandamonium for the visiting supporters! Brian Talbot gave debuts for Kelvin Lomax and Matty Barlow but the party was spoiled in the last minute when County, seemingly heading for their ninth home defeat of the season, snatched a headed equaliser through Barras. The goal was undeserved but we are safe and that’s all that’s important.

Talbot summed up, “The last 12 games have kept us up and that's what's important. It makes the season. I would have liked to have won today as I wanted to finish as high as we could. I don't know the results of the other clubs but fair play, well done to the players. I thought that we deserved to win though. I've worked hard with the back five. It's a young back five but that's been the platform for the success I've had since I've been here. Obviously we've had changes. We've had Gareth Owen in who did a good job for us and Danny Hall's come in and linked with Will Haining and done a good job as well. Young Adam Griffin has been superb since I've been here and I think he's an underrated player”.
