Oldham star Jermaine Johnson got his marching orders as the Latics fought out an eventful goalless draw with Bristol City.

Johnson, who had just returned from representing Jamaica in their World Cup qualifiers collected a yellow card in each half as well as wasting the best chance of the game.

Both sides had openings at Boundary Park but could not find the breakthrough, leaving Oldham without a win in seven games and City with just one victory on their travels.

The match was dominated by an incident in the first-half involving Johnson and his marker Danny Coles.

The striker claimed to have been elbowed off the ball and Coles was booked by referee Mark Warren but Johnson jumped to his feet and squared up to the visiting defence.

He escaped punishment but was then cautioned on the stroke of half-time for another tangle with Coles.

Tempers calmed until the 77th minute when Johnson caught Matthew Hill with a late tackle and was promptly punished once again by Mr Warren. He will miss Oldham's home match against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Earlier, winger Kevin Betsy fired over for the home side and Johnson forced a good low save by City keeper Steve Philips.

The visitors responded through a Mickey Bell header which came back off the post as Leroy Lita just failed to connect.

Lita was denied by Leslie Pogliacomi and Oldham's Scott Vernon blazed a good chance wide before half time.

Vernon then headed off target from 10 yards before Philips made a reaction stop as Johnson met a David Eyres cross from close range.

Oldham had to defend for the last 15 minutes and they remained solid despite coming under increasing pressure from City.

The visitors lacked invention around the box and failed to give Pogliacomi another test.
