The Latics finished their season with a whimper as they never turned up to play in what became their ninth home league defeat in a horrible season. Charlton Athletic looked like a team fighting for an automatic promotion place and deserved their 2-0 victory but a Leeds United victory means that they will have now to play off the the third promotion place. Charlton's goals came from Lloyd Sam in the first half and their win was sealed after a howler from Darryl Flahavan as he let a tame shot trickle over the line.

Caretaker manager Martin Gray commented after the game, "Their goals came from two mistakes and that sums up the season overall. We have played some good, attractive football, but when we have been beaten it has been through our own mistakes. Youth is the way forward and the policy Tony Philliskirk and Mick Priest have set up is fantastic, and long may it continue."
