Blackpool stepped up their dramatic improvement in form with a deserved win against fellow strugglers Oldham.

Goals from John Murphy and Richie Wellens gave the Seasiders back to back away victories in Coca-Cola League One and with a home draw in between, they are close to escaping the drop zone.

Blackpool were always the better side at Boundary Park as they hit back from a goal down after Oldham scored against the run of play.

Oldham, who were without strikers Jermaine Johnson and Rodney Jack because of international duty, offered little upfront and were booed off at the end by their disappointed fans.

Blackpool also had a change in attack as Murphy returned to the starting line-up when Scott Vernon, who is on loan from Oldham, had to sit out the game.

But Murphy scored a quality goal which turned the tide in Blackpool's favour.

The big centre-forward went close as early as the third minute when his header from a Danny Coid cross forced a good tip over from Oldham keeper Les Pogliacomi.

Mark Arber headed wide for Oldham, but Wellens issued a warning shot when he fired over at the end of a 30-yard run.

Simon Grayson was also kept out by the reflexes of Pogliacomi but Oldham took the lead on 39 minutes with their first attempt on target.

David Eyres sent in a corner from the right which defender Will Haining met powerfully at the near post to convert from six yards.

The visitors responded well and they drew level only two minutes before half-time.

Murphy teed up his own chance when he flicked the ball on to his right foot and volleyed inside the far post from 16 yards.

Oldham tried to respond through a Kevin Betsy header on 59 minutes, but the Latics fell behind nine minutes later after failing to clear a throw-in.

Wellens took advantage by drilling his shot home from ten yards before centre-back Peter Clarke almost added a third when he headed wide from a corner.

Oldham's form did not improve in the last quarter of the game and Blackpool keeper Lee Jones was able to enjoy a quiet afternoon.
