Cardiff ran rampant at Boundary Park and sent the Latics play-off aspirations out of the window. They won 1-7 and inflicted the first home league defeat of Mick Wadsworths reign. On loan Andy Goram, making his debut, must have wandered what he has let himself in for on a day the Latics will want to forget.

The Bluebirds were five up at the half and the Latics were one down, a player that is, as Matt Appleby was dismissed in the 32nd. minute following a second bookable offence. Cardiff's first half goals came from a Young header, Fortune-West (2), a Thorne header and a Campbell walk in after an unlucky break off Goram.

Campbell made it 0-6 after a poor Armstrong backpass and in the 73rd. minute he completed his hat trick to put Cardiff seven up. Stuart Balmer slotted in a consolation after an Eyres free kick in the 74th. minute but it was a black day for all Latics supporters and club officials alike.

A shocked Wadsworth said, “I have never had a day like this as a manager or coach. We made a cow's backside of it in every sense. It was extremely poor from the first goal to the last minute and it's a total disaster but we will harbour our ambitions. I have thought all week that 15 points would get us into the play-offs and there is still hope that we can do it.” Commenting on Appleby's sending off he added, “Matt is not a baby, he is a senior player who should have a lot more sense. I will look at disciplining him.”
