Athletic went down again in another friendly against a young Sunderland team in front of 1,493 supporters. The visitors were two goals up following two schoolboy howlers from centre-back Reuben Hazell. The first occurred after the defender slipped and allowed the surprised forward to go through one-on-one with Dean Brill. Brill should heve been out earlier to smother the danger but he stayed in his goalmouth and the Sunderland player had no difficulty in rounding him to score. The second goal came after an underhit back-pass from Hazell gave a clear run through for the forward to score.

Athletic improved in the second half and had a few chances to salvage the game but poor finishing resulted in no rewards. In the 55th minute, the hard working Keigan Parker was bustled over by Sunderland's outstanding defender Jean Y'ves M'Voto in the penalty area and the referee pointed to the spot. After some confusion as to who was going to take the kick, Pawel Abbott stepped up and powered the his low kick into the roof of the net off the keeper's hand.
