Athletic pushed struggling Swindon closer to relegation with a fine 2-0, back to winning, performance. Allan Smart was carried off after a clash of heads after 35 minutes and Eyre was introduced. It became the turning point of the game as the emergency striker hit both goals to take his total for the season to six.

The first came with one of his first touches from a corner when he headed in from close range on the stroke of half time. The security goal came after Rachubka set up an attack with a quick throw out. Eyres crossed the ball and Eyre powered in his second header.

A relieved Mick Wadsworth commented, “That was a much-needed win after a bad week. The most important thing was that we looked solid again which is always a good springboard for victory. Hopefully we are back on track. When you are trying to build a team you always have to accept that there will be blips. Our defeat at Chesterfield in the league on Saturday really hurt the players and I'm pleased with the way they're responding because of the fact they were so disappointed on Saturday.”
